Hey everyone, it’s Allie! Bryan may be the writer, but I thought you might want to know a little bit about the behind-the-scenes of When the Night Comes Out, so I decided to let you in on my thought process while I was making the Halloween Special TRAILER. If you’re interested in this kind of content, I’d be happy to blog about the Halloween Special itself because I had an absolute blast making that!
Alright, picture this: It’s midnight on a random Wednesday night/Thursday morning (if you want to be PARTICULAR). I’m wrapping up pre-production on the last story in the Halloween special. As much as I want to record it, uhhh it’s midnight… My voice is NOT prepared for narrating 13 pages of pure terror, unfortunately. But I’m so PUMPED UP. It has been a while since we released anything for the podcast and I’m basically in creative withdrawal. What to do, what to do…
IT HITS ME: A trailer! We need to garner views/listens and what better way to get people really excited for this special that I’M so excited about and that Bryan is so excited about than a creepy trailer?! I open up Google Docs (yes, you can sponsor us Google, stop asking) and immediately start typing. I would say it takes me approximately 45 seconds to write this trailer because it’s admittedly simple, but also because I’m just in the groove and these episodes have been flowing through my veins like Halloween candy.
I run and pick out an amazing song by Vivek Abhishek (I use his music for everything these days because he’s immensely talented and versatile), then pull it into Adobe Audition and hit record. What do I record first? The breathing at the beginning, duh. Then I read my script in a couple of takes and do a quick content edit on the VO. It’s missing sound effects, so I hop on over to YouTube and pick out relevant sound effects for each story and edit them in. And no, it’s not me screaming in the trailer. This time. As much as I love screaming for this podcast, it’s midnight and I don’t want to scare my cats.
One final edit later and a couple of tweaks here and there, then BOOM. I’ve completed a trailer in about 45 minutes. This is why I need to stop drinking coffee after 10 p.m. But also, do I realllllllyyyyyy?
Making this trailer was definitely a fun process because who doesn’t love those sudden bursts of ambition and productivity you get in the middle of the night when you should be sleeping? Also I paused Scream to make the trailer, so that shows how important it was to me. I don’t just PAUSE Scream. I thought having the movie on in the background of the trailer might be a little distracting though, so I made the sacrifice. You’re welcome.
I hope you’re as excited for the Halloween Special as I am. It has reignited the podcast passion in me and thanks to the Halloween spirit, I’m now about to start pre-production on the next season of WTNCO, which I’m so excited about and will announce shortly. So… this Halloween… while you’re driving to and from work and can’t get your fill of terror via my specially curated Halloween Movie List (that my Facebook followers had all BETTER be watching…) tune into Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube or your chosen podcast app to listen to: WTNCO PRESENTS: THE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL.
Stay safe this Halloween, everyone. Because you never know what terrors await… when the night comes out.
